There are lots of confusing terms used by LinkedIn™ to describe the many functions on their site. Luckily for you, I have produced my patented ‘LinkedIn™ dictionary’ to help you understand what they all mean.

1st Degree Connections – People you are directly connected to (friends)
2nd Degree Connections – People connected to your 1st degree connections that you are not yet connected with (friends of friends)
3rd Degree Connections – People connected to your 2nd degree connections that you are not connected with (friends of friends of friends)
Groups – Communities where people with similar interests can meet, network, discuss relevant topics, promote events, give advice and share job opportunities.
Discussions – This feature allows group members to post content to groups on LinkedIn™. Discussions should offer useful info & encourage dialogue.
LinkedIn™ Premium – The paid subscription services on LinkedIn™.

2. Business – For people who want to network more
3. Sales – For Sales Professionals
4. Hiring – For recruitment professionals or hiring managers
InMail – LinkedIn™ Premium feature that allows paid subscribers to send messages to anyone on LinkedIn™ without needing to be connected to them. Popular with sales professionals.
Introduction – Feature in the messaging section that enables you to introduce or be introduced to someone via a mutual connection. Very useful feature that I use all the time.
Connection Request – Connect to someone on LinkedIn™. Don’t forget to send a personalised note giving them a good reason to connect.
Invitation – Message sent to a person not on LinkedIn™ inviting them to become a member. Very annoying & not recommended unless you want to alienate those in your network who are not yet on LinkedIn™.
Recommendation – Modern version of reference letter or client testimonial. Normally used to recommend former or past colleagues, business partners or suppliers. One of the most powerful features in LinkedIn™.
All Star Profile – 100% completed profile. Essential if you want to show up in recruiter or client searches.
Company Page – Page linked to your profile where you can post information about your company. Great for employer branding, company branding, company news advertising jobs etc
Company Showcase Page – Subset of company pages. Good for companies with multiple products that they want to highlight.
Skills & Endorsements – Excellent for SEO or helping you show up in client and recruiter searches. You can have up to 50 listed. The question you need to be able to answer is ‘does <yourname> know about <thisskill>?’.
